United States
Cuts to UN Refugee Funding
The Trump administration is planning to cut all remaining U.S. funding for the main UN program for Palestinian refugees and is lobbying other countries to follow. A formal announcement is expected in the next few weeks with respect to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East. The U.S. has long been the largest individual donor, but earlier this year the U.S. cut funding from $130 million to $65 million, questioning the organization’s operation and aiming to push for a huge reduction in the number of Palestinians officially registered as refugees. This map depicts information on the number of registered Palestine refugees, official camps, UNRWA schools, health centers and other facilities. New Mexico Bus Crash
Yesterday, a semi-trailer collided with a Greyhound bus that was filled with passengers on the I-40, in northwestern New Mexico. The crash took 7 people’s lives and injured the majority of the 49 passengers on the bus; the truck driver is expected to recover. It is presumed that the semi-truck had a flat tire, which caused the collision with the Greyhound bus traveling from St. Louis to Los Angeles. This map depicts the route the bus was taking and the location of the crash. Click on the map to learn more.

World
More than a Pest: Crop Production and Climate Change
Yesterday, a new study published in the Journal of Science, detailed worrisome effects of climate change on global food production. Climate change will not only affect what crops will thrive locationally, it also impacts local and global ecosystems, namely insects in this study. Scientists predict that insects will overall consume up to 20 percent more of our crops. There is a growing concern over wheat, rice, and corn production globally as the effects of climate change intensify. Warmer temperatures and more frequent days of mild weather, particularly in temperate agricultural zones such as the U.S. and Western Europe, will allow insects to thrive and consume more food. While pesticides are usually a go-to remedy for insects, scientists also warn that bugs will become increasingly resistant to commonly used pesticides. This map depicts how rises in temperature globally will affect crop production by the year 2050 due to climate change. Click on the map to learn more.
