World’s Oldest Figurative Art
The earliest known figurative painting of an animal has been identified by researchers on the Indonesian island of Borneo. The painting, which is thought to be at least 40,000 years old, was found in a system of caves in the mountains of Borneo’s East Kalimantan province. It depicts a bison-like animal in red and orange colors. Earlier findings in the remote caves in Borneo include depictions of human hands, symbols, and abstract designs.
