United States
Deadly Shooting in New Jersey
A shootout in New Jersey’s second-largest city on Tuesday left six dead including a Jersey City police officer. The firefight began in Bayview Cemetery in Jersey City when police confronted two suspects in a parked van previously linked to a homicide. The suspects shot and killed Police Detective Joe Seals and fled to a kosher grocery store where they gunned down three others. Police killed the suspects following an hours-long stand off. Law enforcement officials believe the attacks were targeted after uncovering anti-Semitic and anti-police sentiments posted online by the suspects.

Papua New Guinea
Bougainville Independence
The Bougainville autonomous region located in the South Pacific overwhelmingly voted for independence from Papua New Guinea on Wednesday. Bougainville Referendum Commission Chairman Bertie Ahern declared that more than 176,928 people or 98% of valid ballots voted in favor of becoming independent. The referendum was part of a peace deal ending a 1988-1998 civil war between Bougainville and Papua New Guinea that claimed the lives of over 20,000 people. The non-binding results, which require ratification from Papua New Guinea’s Parliament, could create the world’s newest country. However, independence will not be immediate as the process of becoming a separate nation could take years to achieve.

Somalia
Al-Shabaab Shootout
On Tuesday night, the terrorist group Al-Shabaab waged an attack on a hotel in Mogadishu that killed three civilians and two soldiers. The five militants, who attacked the compound with guns and grenades, were killed by security forces. The SYL hotel, frequented by government officials and lawmakers, is part of a fortified compound located near the residence of the country’s president. Al-Shabaab is an Islamic fundamentalist group linked to Al-Qaeda. Having lost control over Mogadishu in 2011, the group frequently attacks government and military sites in an attempt to regain a foothold in Somalia.
