United States
Democratic Victory

Democrat Ralph Northam defeated Republican Ed Gillespie in a hard fought race to become Virginia’s 73rd governor in an election being watched across the nation for signs of the national electorate’s mood. Northam had 54% of the votes while Gillespie had 45%. This Democratic victory has reinvigorated Democrats across the nation. “Virginia has told us to end the divisiveness, that we will not condone hatred and bigotry, and to end the politics that have torn this country apart,” said Northam in his victory speech.

Canada
Burqa Ban
On Tuesday, Quebec’s Bill 62, which bans all “face-coverings,” was challenged by Canadian Muslim groups and civil rights organisations.  While the bill does not explicitly state “burqa” or “niqab”-traditional head coverings worn by Muslim women-  it does make clear that anyone covering their face in a similar fashion will not be permitted in areas of public service, such as a school, a bus, or post office.  This bill was passed for security reasons but many Muslim women feel discriminated by it.  The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) and the Canadian Civil Liberties Association have filed to legally challenge this bill in Quebec Superior Court. This map depicts other countries that have completely banned or partially banned the Burqa. Click on the map to learn more about the international progression of Burqa bans.

Middle East
Rising Tension
The Saudi-Yemeni conflict has intensified following Saudi-led air strikes in a Houthi-held area that killed 30 people on Tuesday. This attack was preceded by a Yemeni-led air strike directed at the Saudi Arabian Riyadh National Airport.  As tensions rise between the two countries, which have been at war since 2015, incidences of cholera and famine are plaguing Yemen, whose ports have been closed to shipments from humanitarian aid. In light of recent corruption indictments by Saudi government officials, Yemen has offered asylum to these former Saudi officials which has also contributed to increased tensions in the region. This map depicts the Houthi-held area in Yemen. Click on the map for an in-depth introduction to the ongoing Saudi-Yemeni conflict.
