Detention?
On Thursday, as part of President Trump’s new executive order to keep immigrant families together, the Justice Department sought to modify a federal court order that limits the ability of U.S. officials to detain immigrant children for over 20 days. Over 11,200 migrant children have been placed in about 100 shelters, 2,500 of whom have already been separated from their parents. The separated children have been sent to shelters in at least 15 states. Meanwhile, the Pentagon announced plans to shelter 20,000 migrant children on four military bases in the coming months – stemming from an agreement made with the Dept. of Health and Human Services to provide beds for children at military installations. This interactive map depicts migrant children’s shelters across the United States.
