Yemen
Battle Worsens In Hodeidah
Since Sunday, fighting has increased in the city of Hodeidah as Yemeni forces attempt to seize more ground. The pro-government forces are backed by Saudi-Arabia and the United Arab Emirates and are trying to take back the city center held by Iran-supported Houthi rebels. Yemeni air strikes and ground troops are focusing their attacks near the airport, the main road into Hodeidah, and around a university – leaving many citizens trapped. The port city is an important lifeline for the country’s food imports – 90% of Yemeni food supply consists of imported goods. The U.S. and the U.K. have asked to put an end to the conflict and efforts are being made to have peace talks in Sweden next month.

This map depicts the location of port city Hodeidah in Yemen, as well as the areas of the city where there have been attacks. Click on the map to learn more.

Egypt
Ancient Ramp Discovery
At a site in the eastern desert of Egypt, ancient stone-working ramps have been found, dating back 4,500 years. The discovery was made at an alabaster quarry by a research team from the University of Liverpool and Cairo’s French Institute for Oriental Archaeology. It provides new insight into the possible logistics of how the three Great Pyramids of Giza were constructed by the Egyptians, suggesting that large alabaster blocks were carried up using a huge sled and rope. The largest of the three pyramids is 455 ft (139 m) high, and the pyramid complex is the oldest of the Seven Wonders. The construction of the Great Pyramids of Giza has puzzled archaeologists for centuries.
