Experts Fear Fall Surge
Almost half of the states in the U.S. are reporting increased numbers of new cases of COVID-19. This map by the Coronavirus Research Center at Johns Hopkins University shows the cumulative cases of COVID-19 in the United States. Twenty-one U.S. states have reported a 10% increase in new cases of the virus compared to the previous week. Experts fear a huge surge in cases as the weather gets colder and people spend more time indoors where there is a greater likelihood of transmission. According to Johns Hopkins University, there have been 7.1 million cases in the United States since the beginning of the pandemic and 205,000 deaths.

Armenia & Azerbaijan
Deadly Conflict in Disputed Area
Violent conflict began between Armenia and Azerbaijan on Sunday in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region. While Nagorno-Karabakh is located within Azerbaijan, it has been controlled by ethnic Armenian forces since the 1994 ceasefire of war between the two countries. As of Sunday, both nations reported civilian and military casualties, and all three regions (including Nagorno-Karabakh) have declared martial law. Armenia reports the conflict began with Azerbaijan launching an air and artillery attack on Nagorno-Karabakh, while Azerbaijan says their forces are responding to Armenia shelling. Turkey has expressed their support for Azerbaijan, and Russia and France have called for a ceasefire. This is not the first time a deadly skirmish has broken out over the region this year.

Military Plane Crash
On Friday, a military transport plane carrying air force cadets crashed and burst into flames about 400 kilometers (250 miles) east of Kyiv, killing 26 people on board. The twin-turboprop Antonov AN-26 transport plane crashed around 9:00 pm local time about 2km (1.2 miles) from a military airport in Chuhuiv. Officials stated the plane went down near a highway where motorists attempted to help douse the flames. One person survived and was hospitalized in critical condition. The cause of the accident was not immediately clear but investigators were reportedly considering four possible causes – a technical malfunction of the aircraft, improper performance by either the flight crew or ground control, and poor maintenance.
