United States
Flight Failure
Southwest Airline Flight 1380, from New York to Dallas experienced major troubles as the plane’s left engine exploded. One passenger was partially sucked out of the window and later died – 7 others were injured. As the cabin depressurized, the Captain Tammie Jo Shults managed to re-route and land the plane in Philadelphia. Investigators said Wednesday the cause of the explosion was likely metal fatigue in the engine despite earlier inspections. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has subsequently ordered inspections of fan blades on jet engines that are the same as the one on Flight 1380, including planes of Delta and American Airlines. This map depicts the projected and changed path of Flight 1380. Click on the map to learn more.

Iran
Earthquake Shakes
A 5.5 magnitude earthquake struck in the province of Bushehr, Iran Thursday morning.  The U.S. Geological Survey reported the epicenter was 6.2 miles below the surface; located 60 miles away from the country’s only nuclear power plant, in a sparsely populated area. Little to no damages or injuries were reported. The Bushehr nuclear plant is built to resist earthquake tremors and has withstood a number of earthquakes in the past. Iran sits on major fault lines and experiences minor seismic activity almost every day. This map depicts the epicenter of the earthquake in the Bushehr province of Iran. Click on the map to learn more.
