Florida Mass Shooting
A shooting at a video game competition in Jacksonville, Florida left two people, along with the suspect dead, and nine others injured on Sunday. The tournament, Madden 19 NFL Classic, was held in a gaming bar and was live-streamed on Twitch, an online network where users can watch other players play video games. David Katz, a 24-year-old gamer from Baltimore, Maryland brought a gun into the venue and opened fire. It is still unclear what his motives were; however, he previously won the tournament in 2017 with a prize of $25,000. Electronic Arts, the Madden game developer, released a statement to express mourning, and that they would carry on the tournament’s three other planned events in the following months. This map depicts the location of the mass shooting. Myanmar
U.N. Allegations of Genocide
U.N. investigators say in a report that under international law, six Myanmar military generals should be prosecuted for crimes carried out with “genocidal intent” against Muslim Rohingya. Allegations of genocide and crimes against humanity included mass killings, torching villages, gang rapes, and torture – as well as extermination and forced deportation – attempts at ethnic cleansing. Last year, government troops led a crackdown in the state of Rakhine, Myanmar, in response to attacks by the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) on 30 Myanmar police posts and a military base. Around 700,000 Rohingya fled to neighboring areas; most now live in refugee camps in Bangladesh. This map depicts Rohingya land and maritime migration routes from Rakhine, Myanmar. Brazil
Amazon Tribe Discovered
New video footage from a drone shows an isolated Amazon tribe in Brazil near its border with Peru that has had no contact with the outside world. The images were captured by the National Indian Foundation, a government agency also known as FUNAI that aims to protect indigenous people. The region, Vale do Javari, has eight indigenous peoples who have had some contact with the outside world, and at least 11 others who have not. Activists say encroachment of outsiders, often accompanied by violence, and destruction of the rainforest, threaten the survival of these tribes. This map depicts the location of the Amazon tribes.
