United States
Former Detainees Brought Home
Three Americans who were held in North Korean political labor camp Kwanliso 16 returned to the United States Wednesday afternoon. Kim Hak-song, Kim Dong-chul and Kim Sang-duk were released by Kim Jong Un’s administration after two years of detention. Two planes, one carrying the former detainees and another carrying Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, landed in Anchorage, Alaska, where President Donald Trump greeted the men. White House Press Secretary, Sarah Sanders, released a statement thanking Kim Jong Un for his generosity in freeing the American citizens. The three men are said to be in good health. There are still many detainees from several countries including South Korea, Japan, Lebanon, France, and Italy still being held in Kwanliso 16. This map depicts Kwanliso 16 (Camp 16) in North Korea. Switzerland
Swiss Assisted Suicide
On Thursday, David Goodall, a 104-year-old Australian ecologist, botanist, and right-to-die advocate, ended his life at a clinic in Switzerland.  Although he was not terminally ill, Mr. Goodall’s decision to end his life was driven by his deteriorating quality of life. Assisted suicide is only legal in one state in Australia, where eligibility requires a person to be terminally ill. Assisted suicide has been allowed in Switzerland since 1942; it is the only country that offers assisted suicide to foreign nationals. This interactive map depicts euthanasia regulations around the world. Click on the map to explore.

Kenya
Major Dam-age
In Kenya’s Rift Valley, about 93 miles north-west of the capital, Nairobi, the Patel Dam burst open after weeks of floods and heavy rain. At least 32 people are confirmed dead and many more injured or missing. Residents in the area describe a “sea of water” that came rushing through the predominantly flower – farming area as it ripped apart homes and trees. The water submerged nearly all the homes within a mile radius.  Since March, rains and flooding have displaced about 230,000 people. The Red Cross and other aid organizations are attempting to rescue those who may be stuck under thick mud. This map depicts the location of Patel Dam and surrounding farmland. Click on the map to learn more.
