United States
Fourth Austin Explosion
Overnight, a blast in Austin, Texas injured two people; the fourth explosion in the area this month, possibly triggered by a tripwire.  It is believed this fourth incident is related to other bombings; whether the bombings are hate crimes is still to be determined. Hours after Austin’s Police Chief urged the suspect(s) to turn themselves in, the package was detonated. The attack has heightened concerns in the area, as well as impacted school children, as the Austin Independent School District cannot send buses into the affected areas. SXSW has also been impacted by the bombings, shutting down a Roots concert after a bomb threat. This map depicts the locations of the four bombings in Austin. Click on the map to learn more.

Syria
Turkish-backed Rebels seize Afrin
On Sunday, Turkish-backed Syrian rebels took control of the city of Afrin, in northern Syria. This takes place after a two-month-long offensive, launched by the Turkish military and multiple rebel factions against the YPG (People’s Protection Units) militia and the surrounding, to gain control of the mostly Kurdish, region. There have been reports that after seizing Afrin, which had been controlled by Kurdish militia, the rebels looted the area, and marched into the town center to raise their flags. Syrian opposition leaders condemned the looting of public and private property. This map depicts the location Afrin part of the Aleppo Governorate. Click on the map to learn more.

In south-eastern Austalia, dozens have homes have been destroyed in Tathra, within the Baga, New South Wales (NSW). Hundreds of homes in the coastal town of Tathra and its surrounding areas have lost power. The NSW Rural Fire Service communicated the bushfires are the worst of Australia’s summer season; the fire, which burned through over 1,000 hectares, has not been contained. Authorities said four people were treated for smoke inhalation, and a firefighter was injured.
