United States
Garlic Festival Shooting
3 people were killed and 15 injured after 19-year-old Santino William Legan opened fire at the Gilroy Garlic Festival in California on Sunday. The shooting took place on the last day of the annual festival, which features live entertainment and cooking competitions. Police officers fatally shot Legan, who cut through a wire fence to avoid security, shortly after he began firing. Authorities are investigating whether there was a second suspect involved. The gunman’s motives are still unclear.

Nigeria
Deadly Attack on Village
An attack on a group returning from a funeral on Saturday in the northeastern region state of Borno killed 65 people and injured 10 in one of the deadliest extremist attacks on civilians in the region in recent years. There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but Boko Haram and the Islamic State in West Africa are known to carry out frequent attacks in the region. A local government official said in a statement the assault was likely an act of retaliation for the killing of 11 Boko Haram fighters two weeks ago. Last week, Nigeria marked the 10-year anniversary of the rise of the Boko Haram insurgency, which has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced millions. Nigerian president Muhammad Buhari condemned the attacks on Sunday and directed military patrols of Borno in search of the attackers.

Arctic
Wildfires Cover Arctic with Smoke
Hundreds of wildfires are raging throughout the Arctic, sending up plumes of smoke so huge that they can be seen from space. The fires are especially severe in uninhabited areas across northern Siberia, northern Scandinavia, eastern Russia, Alaska, and Greenland. The smoke, which has engulfed an area of more than 1.7 million square miles, is so thick that some areas are suffering a major reduction in the amount of sunlight they receive, along with a widespread decline in air quality. Scientists monitoring the situation said the smoke will likely exacerbate the effects of climate change, as the amount of CO2 added to the atmosphere by Arctic wildfires in the first three weeks of July is equal to the annual CO2 emissions for all of Sweden.
