Gas Blast
Yesterday afternoon in San Francisco, a Pacific Gas and Electric Co. (PG&E) line exploded after being accidentally struck by a Verizon subcontractor, MasTec. The busy intersection in the Jordan Park neighborhood, which holds commercial and residential properties, immediately evacuated as fire engines approached the scene. Due to the shallow gas valve, PG&E workers had to manually dig to reach and turn off the connector fueling the flames. There were no reports of injuries or missing persons.

Magnetic North on the Move
Earth’s magnetic north is always shifting, moving around 30 miles (50 km) a year. Typically reported every five years, the World Magnetic Model released an update one year earlier than normal due to the unusual fast shifting of the magnetic north. Tracking the location of magnetic north is important as it keeps navigational services updated and accurate. Scientists are not sure why its movement is changing at an increased pace, but they hypothesize two scenarios: a geomagnetic pulse that occurred under South America in 2016 altered the movement, or a high-speed stream of liquid iron in Earth’s core under Canada is causing the shift.

Swine Fever Outbreak
A wide-spread African swine fever has hit China, causing a drastic price drop in pork amid the Chinese New Year. African swine fever has slowly spread through mainland China throughout January, causing farmers to take their pigs to the market early to avoid containment and culling of their animals. The Chinese government has set up epidemic zones across the country to restrict the movement of live pigs. China produces over half of the world’s pigs. It is expected that bringing pigs to market early will affect prices in the latter half of the year as supply decreases. African swine fever cannot be passed from animals to humans.
