United States
Gun Reform
Following last week’s attack at a Florida high school, where 17 people were killed, students are rallying to march on the State Capitol, Tallahassee, to demand gun reform and more attention to mental health. Students have also taken to social media to demand change. After previous mass shootings, talks about issues related gun have tended to dissipate with the lack of legislative change. However, experts believe this time might be different given the students’ activism and strong generational aptitude for social media.  In addition to the march in Tallahassee, the survivors have coordinated the “March for Our Lives” in D.C. later this this March.

Ukraine
EU Ends Border Projects
The European Union plans to end financial support for the updates Ukraine was completing on their six border checkpoints.  The goal of this project was to integrate the Ukrainian economy with their EU neighbors while improving customs procedure time.  Ukraine received 29.2 million euros from the EU by the end of 2017, yet none of the construction had begun on the checkpoint sites. The project’s main completion issue was Ukraine’s inability to co-finance the necessary construction funding.  The construction agency, Energomontazhventilatsia, tasked with completing most of the checkpoint construction, blamed their inability to finish the project on obstructive EU and Ukrainian government officials not paying the agency for their work.

Wakanda
Black Panther Nation
The latest Marvel Movie, Black Panther, is set in a fictional nation in Africa. While there is a general consensus that the top-grossing movie takes place somewhere in East Africa, the exact location has varied throughout the nation’s publication history. Some sources say Wakanda is located just north of Tanzania, however, the Marvel Cinematic Universe atlas more accurately places Wakanda just north of Lake Turkana, bordering Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, and South Sudan.  While typical movies depict Africa as a war-torn country, Wakanda is rich in resources and the most technologically advanced nation in the world. Black Panther has been selling out theaters across America, Africa, and unexpected countries such as Poland and South Korea.

This map depicts the location of where Wakanda could be located in Africa.  Click on the map to learn more.
