High School Shooting Kills Four
Two teachers and two students were killed at a shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, yesterday. Eight students and a teacher were also injured. The accused shooter, a 14-year-old student of the school, has been arrested and will be charged as an adult in the incident. The suspect had been interviewed by local law enforcement last year after the FBI’s Atlanta office flagged multiple online threats over a school shooting. The K-12 Shooting Database, which tracks every time a gun is brandished, fired, or a bullet hits school property, says this is the 218th gun-related incident at a school so far in 2024.

Polio Vaccinations in Gaza
Starting today, Palestinian children in the south of the Gaza Strip are being vaccinated against polio in the second stage of a campaign that has so far seen 187,000 people inoculated. The United Nations Palestinian refugee agency UNRWA said the campaign, taking place after Hamas and Israel agreed on limited pauses in their fighting, was so far successful but complex. Israel has said the vaccination program will continue through Monday and last eight hours a day. Health officials aim to reach 640,000 Gaza children for vaccination against polio in the campaign, which was launched after the discovery of a case of a one-year-old baby who was partially paralyzed. This was the first known case of the disease in Gaza – one of the world’s most densely populated places – in 25 years.

Bermuda
Big Shark Eaten by Bigger Shark
A research team has revealed evidence for the first-known instance of a large shark being eaten by a predator. As described in an article in the journal Frontiers in Marine Science, in October, 2020, the team caught an eight-foot (2.4 m) pregnant porbeagle shark off Cape Cod, and fitted the female with a finmount tag that provides geolocation data whenever the fin comes out of the water, and a pop-off satellite archival tag (PSAT) that tracks temperature and ocean depth and transmits its data to a satellite once its readings indicate it has fallen off or its carrier has died. After having been tracked hundreds of miles to Bermuda, the temperature readings recorded by the PSAT on the porbeagle shark jumped, despite the depth staying roughly the same. This would indicate the female was eaten by a larger shark. Scientists hope that by understanding how the species might be protected from predation by other sharks, they might have solutions to boost porbeagle populations.
This map depicts the capture location and the location readings received from an eight-foot pregnant porbeagle shark that is believed to have been eaten by another, larger shark near Bermuda. Click on the map to learn more.

Q: The proposed country of Cascadia in the U.S. Pacific Northwest is defined by the watershed of what river?
A: Columbia River
The Cascadia movement is an independence movement based in the Cascadia bioregion of western North America. The Cascadia Bioregion encompasses all or portions of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, California, Nevada, Wyoming, Montana, Alaska, British Columbia, and Alberta. Bioregion is short for ‘bio-cultural region’ and are geographically based areas defined by a physical traits; land or soil composition, watershed, climate, flora, and fauna; as well as the cultural traits of the inhabitants that live within them, and act upon them. The Cascadia Bioregion includes the entire watershed of the Columbia River (as far as the Continental Divide), as well as the Cascade Range from Northern California well into Canada. The Columbia River watershed alone, the largest in Cascadia, includes parts of six US states and one Canadian province.
