Honoring George H.W. Bush
Citizens, former living presidents, politicians and leaders from around the world gather at the Washington National Cathedral in D.C. today to honor former U.S. President, George H.W. Bush.  The president passed away Friday at the age of 94. After the state funeral, a long-held American tradition, the 41st President’s body will be returned to Houston where he will be buried Thursday at the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library in College Station, Texas.  President Trump has ordered the federal government closed today for a day of national mourning.

NATO
INF Troubles
NATO countries have formally accused Russia of not abiding to the 1987 Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty, signed by former U.S. President, Ronald Regan, and former Soviet leader, Mikhail Gorbachev, signaling the end of the Cold War.  In a statement yesterday, NATO said Russia has “developed and fielded a missile system, the 9M729, which violates the INF Treaty and poses significant risks to Euro-Atlantic security.” In response, the United States has threatened to withdraw from the INF Treaty if Russia fails to realign itself with the treaty within 60 days. Russian leader, Vladimir Putin, said today that there is no evidence they have developed a new missile system and warned of “retaliation” if the US withdraws.

New Caledonia
South Pacific Earthquake
Approximately 104 miles off the coast of New Caledonia, a 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck in the South Pacific triggering a tsunami warning.  While the tsunami warning was later rescinded, a powerful 6.6 magnitude aftershock occurred triggering waves of 3-10 feet in coastal areas.  No immediate damages were reported in nearby New Caledonia or Vanuatu.  New Caledonia and Vanuatu are both archipelagos with similar populations, about 270,000 people each. Their location along the Pacific Ring of Fire makes them vulnerable to earthquakes and subsequent tsunami waves.

This map depicts the epicenter of the earthquake and recorded aftershocks. Click on the map to learn more.
