United States
Hurricane Lane
As Hurricane Lane approaches the Hawaiian Islands, it has weakened from a category 4 storm to a category 3. However, more than 19 inches of rain fell over the northeastern section of Hawaii’s Big Island within the past 24 hours, according to the National Weather Service. The storm has triggered landslides and floods, forcing officials to shut down some roads. The center of the storm is expected to move very close to the main islands on Friday – potentially becoming the first major hurricane to make landfall in Hawaii in 26 years. Even if the hurricane doesn’t make landfall, it still remains a serious threat as it passes Hawaii this weekend. This map depicts the forecast of Hurricane Lane. Click on the map to learn more.

Yemen
Saudi-Led Attack
A Saudi-backed coalition lead another attack 20 km outside of the port city of Hodeidah in Duraihimi, Yemen. Reports confirm that at least 22 children and 4 women have died. The attack struck a camp for internally displaced people; the victims were all part of one extended family that was attempting to relocate after 5 members of the family were killed in attack in Hodeidah on Wednesday. The United Nations claims that Yemen is now the center of the world’s worst humanitarian crisis with nearly 22 million people needing aid and protection. This map depicts the port city of Hodeidah and Duraihimi, the locations of the Saudi-led attacks. Click on the map to learn more.

United States
Drug Tunnel Found
The U.S. authorities have found a secret drug tunnel stretching from Arizona to Mexico. Ivan Lopez, the owner of a former KFC in San Luis, Arizona, was arrested on August 13 when police pulled him over and discovered drugs in his truck. Agents then executed a search warrant at Lopez’s house and restaurant, where they found the alleged drug smuggling operation. The tunnel is 22 ft. deep and 590 ft. long – leading to a trap door under a bed in San Luis Rio Colorado, Mexico. It is unclear how long the tunnel had been in operation, and Homeland Security officials and Yuma Border Patrol agents are investigating the incident. This map depicts the drug tunnel between the U.S. and Mexico.
