Keystone XL Pipeline Halted
A federal judge blocked the construction of the proposed Keystone XL Pipeline addition late Thursday after finding that the Trump administration had “discarded” facts in 2017 when it approved the pipeline. The judge has ordered the state department to conduct a more thorough analysis into the proposed pipeline’s effects on climate, Native American resources, gas emissions, wildlife, and it’s propensity for oil spills. The existing Keystone Pipeline stretches from Canadian oil sands into the Gulf Coast. The 1,179-mile addition under examination would stretch through Montana, South Dakota and Nebraska, crossing through multiple Native American lands.

Fueled by the Santa Ana winds, the Camp Fire, about 85 miles north of Sacramento has quickly grown to 18,000 acres according to Cal Fire, moving across northern California county at a rate of about 80 football fields per minute. Cal Fire says the Hill Fire in southern California has burned through at least 10,000 acres and the Woolsey Fire has burned 8,000 acres as of this morning.

Ethiopia
Mass Grave Discovered
During a court-ordered investigation into the former Somali-region president, Abdi Mohammed, a mass grave containing at least 200 corpses was discovered on the border of the Somali and Oromia regions in Ethiopia. The former Somali leader, who is currently in detention, is accused of human rights violations under his strong affiliation to the Liyu, a regional militia. The bodies appear to be related to ethnic clashes between the Liyu and other regional militias such as Oromos and Somalis. Authorities have granted investigators two weeks to complete forensic testing to determine the identities of the discovered bodies.
This map depicts the Oromia and Somali regions of Ethiopia where ethnic clashes often occur along the border. Click on the map to learn more.
