United States
Winter Storm
A major winter storm hit the southeast and mid-Atlantic region over the weekend, causing flooding, power outages and difficult travel conditions.  As of Monday morning, over 200,000 people were still without power, nearly half of them located in North Carolina. Areas of Tennessee, the Carolinas, Virginia and West Virginia were buried in well over a foot of snow.  One person was killed during the storm when a tree fell on their car. Airports in the area were severely disrupted and delays will likely continue into Tuesday.

Huawei CFO Detained
Huawei CFO, Meng Wanzhou, has been arrested and is being held in Canada.  She was arrested after a request from the United States on allegations that she covered up Huawei’s ties to a company operating in Iran despite sanctions.  China has requested the release of Wanzhou but Canada will not act until after her hearing. Huawei is the world’s largest supplier of telecommunications equipment and second largest smartphone producer. Still, many countries are raising security concerns due to Huawei’s technology exports to countries like North Korea and Iran.

Jehovah’s Witness Arson
A fire on Friday at a Jehovah’s Witness place of worship in Washington state was determined to be an arson attack.  This is the fifth arson attack in Thurston County since March.  In May, someone fired 35 rounds into a Jehovah Kingdom Hall causing $10,000 in damage. Later in August, that same hall was the site of another attempted arson.  Police in Thurston County are working to identify a suspect.
