Threatened Farms
In the aftermath of Hurricane Florence, the Carolinas continue to experience major flooding in their river basins, with more flooding expected in the next few days. While civilians are dealing with recovery and rescue in the aftermath, in the rural outskirts, farms have been inundated with water – killing poultry and other livestock, and leaching toxic by-products into the water systems. In North Carolina alone, at least 3.4 million chickens and turkeys and over 5,500 hogs have died. Some farms which have not yet lost animals remain isolated by floodwaters where they cannot receive feed, leading farmers to expect losses in the coming days. 16 major rivers are currently flooded, and 3 more are expected to hit their peak levels today.  These maps depict the location of poultry farms (top) and the flooded areas in North Carolina (bottom). Click here to learn more about the poultry farms. Philippines
Landslide Aftermath
On the resort island Cebu in the Philippines, a landslide toppled over 30 homes and left at least 15 people dead Thursday morning.  Rescue efforts are still underway to find any survivors trapped under the rubble. The phenomena comes just days after the Philippines was hit by the strongest storm of the year, Typhoon Mangkhut. Heavy rains following the storm saturated the slopes in the city of Naga, resulting in a landslide. Some environmental activists claim that decades of illegal mining practices in the area also contributed to the landslide. This map depicts the city of Naga on the island of Cebu where the landslide took place. Click on the map to learn more.
