Mask Guidance
Last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued new guidance for wearing masks to control the spread of COVID-19. Americans who have been fully vaccinated are no longer required to wear masks or maintain social distance while indoors or outdoors with other people, except when riding public transport, entering hospitals, doctors offices or other health facilities, or when local rules and regulations require. In response, at least seven states including Connecticut, Illinois, Kentucky, Minnesota, Nevada, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Washington began to adjust their mask wearing guidance. According to this map by the New York Times, 22 states, Washington, DC, and Puerto Rico are still requiring masks indoors, though these rules could change in the coming weeks.

Dangerous Train Derailment
A bridge collapse near Sibley, Iowa caused a Union Pacific freight train derailment and fire on Sunday afternoon. Parts of Sibley were evacuated due to the fire from the engine’s diesel fuel and the threat presented by the train’s cargo of ammonium nitrate, a fertilizer which can be highly explosive when mixed with fuel. While nearly 50 train cars were derailed in the accident, there were no injuries to train crew or local residents. The cause of the bridge collapse and derailment remains under investigation.

Q: Stretching less than 500 feet (150 meters), what border is considered the shortest boundary between two countries?
A: Botswana and Zambia
The world’s shortest border between two countries is located in the Zambezi River between Botswana and Zambia. The 500-foot (150 m) strip represents Botswana’s only frontage to the Zambezi River. The less than 275-foot (85 m) border that divides Morocco from the Spanish exclave of Peñón de Vélez de la Gomera, may be the world’s smallest border, though not between two sovereign states.
