Mask-Wearing Probability
A new study published by Lancet Digital Health analyzes the likelihood of Americans to wear a mask in the grocery store during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study utilizes self-reported data from participants on social-distancing, mask-wearing and COVID-19 transmissions collected throughout June and July 2020. The study found communities with 10% higher-reported mask-wearing subsequently have lower rates of COVID-19 transmission. Additionally, self-reported mask wearing is highest in urbanized areas, and among women and minority groups, according to the study. The results also show mask-wearing is weakest in the west north central division of the United States Census, and state-level mandates have little impact on the likelihood of Americans wearing a mask.

Saudi Arabia
Oil Facility Attacks
One of Saudi Arabia’s most protected petroleum facilities, a storage tank in the Ras Tanura export terminal in the country’s Gulf coast, came under missile attack on Sunday, resulting in oil prices surging. Shrapnel from a missile also landed near a residential compound for employees of national oil company, Saudi Aramco, in the eastern city of Dhahran. The assault, claimed by Yemen’s Houthi rebels, sent oil prices surging above $70. The attacks are the most serious against Saudi oil installations since September 2019. The Houthis have been fighting Yemen’s United Nations-recognized government since 2014. A Saudi-led coalition intervened the following year to back the government. The war, which has been in a military stalemate for years, has killed tens of thousands of people and pushed Yemen to the brink of famine.

Cannabis Carbon Footprint
A recent study published in Nature Sustainability revealed electricity production and natural gas consumption by the nation’s $13 billion cannabis industry was a significant contributor to increasing greenhouse gas emissions. Researchers at Colorado State University found heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems for indoor cannabis cultivation led to the largest energy demand. The demands varied geographically based on measures needed to address the local climate. In Florida, plants require dehumidification, while in Colorado, heating is more important. In Denver, where it is legal to produce retail marijuana, electricity use from cannabis cultivation and other products grew from 1% to 4% of Denver’s total electricity consumption between 2013 and 2018. Researchers have produced an interactive map with their findings to show emissions from cannabis production at the county level in the United States.
