Germany
Abandoning Coal by 2038
Germany announced its plan to close all of the country’s coal plants by 2038. A 335 page report released by a 28 member panel representing mining regions, utility companies, scientists and environmentalists delineates a modest plan to phase out coal plants. The phasing out of coal plants will be reviewed in 2032 to determine if a 2035 deadline is possible. The plan also proposes a 40 billion euro ($45.7 billion) investment in the regions of the country that will be most affected by the closures. Currently, Germany’s coal plants power a third of its electricity consumption and are also the largest emitters of greenhouse gases throughout all of Europe.
