Middle East Peace Plan
The White House released a plan for peace in the Middle East on Tuesday, prompting various responses across the region. The plan proposes an independent Palestinian state, recognizes Israeli sovereignty over West Bank settlements, and retains Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. The announcement of the plan, given jointly by President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington, prompted protests in the Gaza Strip and a denunciation message from Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Regional government leaders from Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Oman have acknowledged the plan but withheld formal endorsements. No Palestinians were present during the announcement of the plan.

Huawei Ban Decision
The British government announced yesterday that it would allow equipment from Chinese company Huawei to be used in its development of a high-speed 5G wireless network. Huawei will be permitted to develop up to 35 percent of the country’s network but prevented from working with strategically significant infrastructure including nuclear power plants and defense systems. The decision goes against efforts from the U.S. government to persuade the U.K. to block technology from Huawei, a company which has been accused of having ties to China’s Communist Party.

Powerful Earthquake
A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck 80 miles off the coast of Jamaica yesterday afternoon, prompting building evacuations across the region. The quake led to a 0.4-foot tsunami in George Town in the Cayman Islands. Tremors were felt across the region, including Miami where schools and other buildings were evacuated. The quake represents the latest in a string of earthquakes in the Caribbean, coming three weeks after a 6.4 magnitude quake caused damage in southern Puerto Rico.
