Belgium
Liege Shooting
In the eastern city of Liege, Belgium, one man attacked pedestrians after just being released from prison. The incident occurred near a cafe where the attacker stabbed two female officers, then stole their service weapons and used against them. After killing the two policemen, the attacker walked along the street and opened fire on a driver. He then took refuge in a nearby high school where he took a woman hostage. The man was then shot and killed by police. It is not yet clear what the motive of the incident was but officials are treating it as a terrorist attack. This map depicts the area of the shooting. Click on the map to learn more.

United States
Migrant Children
Outrage has spread over a report that surfaced in April of nearly 1,500 immigrant children being lost after detainment at the U.S. border. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has come forward to explain that these children are not lost. Nearly 8,000 children in total were placed with sponsors by the U.S. government after October of last year. The HHS voluntarily followed up with the sponsors of these children, of which 1,500 did not respond. The 8,000 children were not separated from their parents at the border, but rather arrived in the U.S. alone – predominantly from Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala. This map depicts the paths taken by many of these migrant children. Malaysia
Search Ends in Mystery
Tuesday, the four-year search for the vanished flight MH370 has ended without answers. The most recent privately-funded search effort, by Texas-based Ocean Infinity, scoured vast areas of the Indian Ocean to no avail. The flight vanished on March 8, 2014, on its journey from the capital of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, to Beijing, China. There is still heated debate around the disappearance. Some theorize that the crash was the result of pilot suicide, while others argue that it vanished due to an accident or technological malfunction. This map depicts the area of the Indian Ocean searched by Ocean Infinity, as well as previous search attempts. Click on the map to learn more.
