Mississippi Senate Results
In the last Senate race of 2018, Cindy Hyde-Smith was elected as Mississippi’s first female senator after a special run-off election on Tuesday. Hyde-Smith ran against opponent Mike Espy, a former congressman and former United States Secretary of Agriculture from 1993 to 1994. Neither won over a 50% majority on Election day. In last night’s special election, Cindy Hyde-Smith won about 56% of the votes.

China
Gene Edited Babies
A Chinese scientist, He Jiankui, claims he has created the world’s first genetically-edited twin girls. His intention is that the gene modification will prevent them from contracting HIV. This type of gene editing is banned in most countries, including China. Scientists are hoping that gene editing could possibly help avoid heritable diseases. His announcement at the genome summit in Hong Kong was condemned by many scientists who worry that altering the genome could harm both the modified individual and any offspring that inherit the same changes.

Australia
Sydney Flooding
On Wednesday, Sydney experienced its heaviest November rainfall since 1984. At one point, the city received its average monthly rainfall in two hours, causing flash-flooding, traffic congestion, public transport delays, and power outages. Officials say dozens of vehicles crashed; a 14-year-old boy died in a crash in Thornleigh, located in the north of Sydney. A state emergency services volunteer also died on duty, and two police officers were injured from a falling tree while attempting to help motorists. While the storm centered on coastal areas of New South Wales, it did not fall over large inland regions affected by drought.

Yesterday’s Answer

Q: Where can you find the world’s only yellow waterfall?

A: China
The waters of the Hukou Waterfall in China are yellow due to the large amount of sediments the river carries. The name Hukou (flask mouth) references the unique way the water flows from a narrow opening, sending waves of smoke into the air when it reaches the ground, resembling steam flowing from a teapot.
