United States
NAFTA Renegotiation?
Government officials for the U.S., Canada, and Mexico are on their seventh of eight days of renegotiation for the 24-year-old North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) deal. Officials failed to make progress in negotiating what products will be produced in the U.S. President Trump told Canada and Mexico that he will not lift potential tariffs on steel and aluminum unless they agree to White House demands.  The White House wants to negotiate an agreement that would allow for growth in the U.S economy and boost manufacturing exports for the U.S.  This map depicts the largest exports by NAFTA partners by state in the U.S. Click on the map to learn more.

United States
Oil Exports On the Rise
As the worldwide demand for oil grows, a report released by the International Energy Agency reveals that the U.S. is on track to be the top oil exporter among other oil-rich countries such as Saudi Arabia and Russia. Recent investments and exploration in the Permian region in Texas and the Federal Gulf of Mexico have added to the United States tight oil potential.   Despite these large oil reserves, there are concerns that the United States’ export capability may be hampered by the current infrastructure, namely oil ports, which run the risk of becoming “bottle-necked” without infrastructural upgrades. This interactive map depicts the location of U.S. oil ports and shale reserves. Click on the map to expand.

Egypt
Egyptian Court Upholds Transfer
Egypt’s top courts officially upheld a decision to transfer Egypt’s two islands, Tiran and Sanafir, to Saudi Arabia.  After the deal was signed, protests erupted over the argument that Egypt was violating its constitution by surrendering their territory to a foreign power.  The official belief of the Egyptian and Saudi government is that the two islands were leased to Egypt in the 1950s to be placed under Cairo’s protection and therefore should be reunited with Saudi Arabia.  Tiran and Sanafir are for the most part unoccupied, yet their location in the Red Sea holds great political and military importance. This map depicts Tiran’s and Sanafir’s location in the Red Sea. Click on the map to learn more.

Yesterday’s Answer

Q: Which ocean has the saltiest water?

A: The Atlantic Ocean
The Atlantic Ocean holds two “deserts” caused by light precipitation and evaporation. These conditions produce an environment for the water to have heavy salt concentrations.
