NBA Legend Killed
On Sunday, NBA legend Kobe Bryant, his daughter, Gianna, and seven others were killed when their helicopter crashed into a steep hillside outside of Calabasas, about 40 miles (65 km) northwest of downtown Los Angeles. The Sikorsky S-76B helicopter built in 1991 was transporting Bryant and others to a sports academy in the nearby city of Thousand Oaks, where he would have coached his daughter’s basketball team in a youth tournament. Officials stated the helicopter departed from John Wayne Airport in Orange County at 9:06 a.m. local time and they received the first 911 call reporting the crash at 9:47 a.m. Investigators are still determining the cause of the fatal crash with officials claiming foggy weather conditions as a possible contributing factor. Bryant, aged 41, was a five-time NBA champion, two-time Olympic gold medalist and was widely regarded as one of the greatest basketball players in history.

Iraq
Attack Near U.S. Embassy
On Sunday, U.S. officials reported rocket attacks near and inside the U.S. Embassy in Iraq. One rocket landed in a dining hall of the embassy, around dinner time. The others landed in the vicinity of the embassy, in the “Green Zone.” Officials have not yet placed responsibility on any person or group of persons. The rocket attacks come amid days of intensified protests in Iraq against the presence of U.S. military in the region.

Turkey
Deadly Quake
A 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck Turkey on Friday evening, hospitalizing over 1,600 people and killing at least 36 others. The earthquake destroyed 76 buildings and damaged 1,000 others in the Elazig province in eastern Turkey. The earthquake was followed by nearly 780 aftershocks with the strongest measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale. Rescue efforts continued over the weekend with tents set up for housing, warm food, and medical aid for those impacted by the quake. President Erdogan Tayip declared the quake a “level 3” disaster for Turkey, indicating Turkey requires a national response but will not seek international assistance.
