United States
New Visa Restrictions Imposed
In a Tuesday notice from the State Department, the United States launched a 12-month pilot program to require foreign nationals from particular countries to pay up to a $15,000 deposit for a tourist or business visa. Although the notice did not specify which countries the program applies to, it stated the affected countries are those identified by the State Department as having high visa overstay rates, insufficient screening information, or offering citizenship by investment without a residency requirement. Since coming into office in January, President Trump’s administration has banned foreign nationals from 12 countries from entering the United States, and imposed restrictions on an additional 7. The State Department stated it will announce the list of affected countries later today.

Hong Kong
Hong Kong Hit by Record Rain
Record-breaking rainfall brought Hong Kong to a standstill on Tuesday, with the Hong Kong Observatory issuing its fourth black rainstorm warning in just eight days – the highest-tier alert in its three-level system. Rain associated with the second black signal, which lasted over 11 hours, triggered severe flooding in areas like Tseung Kwan O, Tai Po, and the Central and Western district, with knee-deep muddy waters and over 9,600 lightning strikes recorded. More than 13.8 inches (350 mm) of rain fell by 2:00pm, marking the city’s highest daily August rainfall since 1884. The extreme weather caused major disruptions, including flight delays, school closures, court suspensions, and hospital interruptions.
This map depicts rainfall distribution across Hong Kong on August 5, 2025, with bright pink areas indicating locations hit by almost 12 inches (300 mm) of rain. Click on the map to learn more.

World
Plastics Pollution Health Crisis
Plastic pollution is a “grave, growing and under-recognized danger” to human and planetary health that is costing the world at least $1.5 trillion a year, experts warned in a Lancet report on Monday. The driver of the crisis is a huge acceleration of plastic production, which has increased by more than 200 times since 1950 and is set to almost triple again to more than a billion tons a year by 2060. The study was published one day ahead of fresh talks in Geneva aiming at getting the world’s first treaty on plastic pollution. This umbrella review of epidemiological research on the health impacts of plastic chemicals showed “consistent evidence for multiple health effects at all stages of human life for many plastic chemicals” and found that infants and young children were especially at risk. The researchers also warned about tiny pieces of plastic called microplastics that have been found throughout nature and in human bodies.

Q: Which volcanic massif is the tallest mountain in Australian Territory?
A: Big Ben
Big Ben is an imposing stratovolcano located on the Australian territory of Heard Island in the southern Indian Ocean. At 9,006 feet (2,745 m), Big Ben’s highest point, Mawson peak, is 1,696 feet (517 m) taller than Mount Kosciuszko, making it the tallest mountain in Australian-owned territory, excluding Antarctica. Heard island hides in dense clouds for around 360 days a year. Among the most remote places on earth, the Territory of Heard Island and the McDonald Islands is made up of mostly barren, volcanic Antarctic islands, about ⅔ of the way between Madagascar and Antarctica. Heard Island and the Macdonald islands contain Australia’s only two active volcanoes. The islands can only be reached by the ocean and are a two-week journey from Australia. Australia’s Antarctic territories include higher peaks but are unrecognized by most other countries.
