New York Sues Drug Companies
Mayor Bill de Blasio of New York City announced a $500 million lawsuit against both drug manufacturers and opioid distributors such as Purdue Pharma LP and Cardinal Health Inc. New York City believes the companies to be responsible for “misleading” marketing of Oxycontin and Percocet. The Centers for Disease Control released a study confirming that the risk of opioid dependency leading to death increases daily as someone is prescribed. Mayor de Blasio stated that if the lawsuit is successful then the money will be used to curve the drug epidemic and hold pharmaceutical companies accountable. This map depicts the percentage of people prescribed to opioids per state across the United States.  Click on the map to learn more.

Gerrymandering Ruling
The Pennsylvania Supreme Court has ruled that the redrawn congressional districts of 2011 are unconstitutional and violate the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.  Pennsylvania has been described as one of the worst gerrymandered states in the nation, indicating that the boundaries of its congressional districts have been unfairly skewed in favor of the Republican Party. While many policymakers applaud the decision, others worry that redrawing new districts before the 2018 Congressional elections may cause chaos and confusion. This image depicts a possible non-partisan district map (left) versus the currently drawn congressional district map (right). Click on the map to learn more.
