United States
Nuclear Negotiations
French President Macron is hoping to persuade President Trump to keep the United States participating in the nuclear agreement with Iran, but with further provisions. President Trump has to make the decision by May 12th. He originally threatened to withdrawal from the agreement unless Congress and the United States’ European partners addressed concerns such as Iran’s missile program and restrictions on the use of uranium. President Trump also believes that the deal should have covered Yemen, Syria and other parts of the Middle East. The European Union’s foreign policy chief said Wednesday that Europe would continue their involvement in the existing Iran deal. Officials in Iran have repeatedly warned that the country will back out of the deal if the U.S. does first. This map depicts major nuclear facilities in Iran and their functions. Click on the map to learn more.

Villagers gathered after midnight to collect oil from the backyard oil well after a large spill was reported. It is not clear what initially started the fire, however, local news agencies reported a spark from a cigarette may have been the cause. Nigeria
Nigerian Church Attacked
A Catholic church in Nigeria’s Middle Belt was targeted by two gunmen on Tuesday in an attack which killed 19 people. Two of the victims were priests serving mass. The attackers were thought to be Fulani cattle headers who were also responsible for setting many homes on fire in the rural village. Violent clashes had occurred in the area between the Fulani herdsmen and the farmers since 2013. Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari vowed those involved in the attack will be “apprehended and brought to justice”. This map depicts the area in Nigeria where the attack occurred.
