NYC Transformer Explosion
A transformer explosion in Queens, New York last night lit the skyline with an unnatural fluorescent blue light, sparking panic and wonder throughout the city. At nearby LaGuardia Airport, the power went out and many flights were delayed due to the explosion. Con Edison said in a statement that the explosion was caused by a brief electrical fire which caused a transmission dip.

Syria
Troops Move into Manbij
For the first time in years, Syrian troops have entered the northern city of Manbij after an appeal from Kurdish forces, who have maintained control of the area throughout the war with backing from the United States. To the north, in Turkey, President Erdogan has vowed to move into Manbij with an offensive meant to remove Kurdish forces from the area, which he considers a terrorist group. With the announcement that the U.S. will withdraw troops from Syria, Kurdish leaders are looking to Russia and Syria to aid them against threats by Turkey.

United States
Brace for a Storm
Heading into the New Year’s weekend, two severe storm systems are moving across the U.S. today. One storm is moving towards the eastern U.S., bringing heavy rain and strong winds that make for poor visibility and travel conditions. The other storm system caused blizzard conditions in the northern Plains and Upper Midwest, killing two people. The South will face threats of torrential rain and flooding. Today, the Dakotas, Nebraska, and Minnesota were hit with about a foot of snow, and some areas of Louisiana and Mississippi saw over 11 inches of rain.
