United States
One Third of Adults Vaccinated
According to a report in the New York Times, 91 million Americans, or 28% of U.S. adults, have received at least one dose of the vaccine and 16% have received both doses. The country is averaging 2.71 million doses given per day, a pace that could allow for 70% of the population to be vaccinated by mid-June. According to this interactive map by the New York Times, Palau, New Mexico, and American Samoa lead the country in highest percentage of population with at least one shot. U.S. President Joe Biden has asked the states to make all adults eligible for the vaccine by May 1st. In Florida and California, this date has been pushed to as early as April 15th, while all adults already have access to the vaccine in Alaska, Texas, and Mississippi.

Mozambique
Military Assault on Palma
Hundreds of jihadists linked to Islamic State (IS) stormed Palma, a town in northern Mozambique, targeting shops, banks and a military barracks. Seven people were killed trying to escape a siege on a hotel, and hundreds of others, both locals and foreigners, were reportedly rescued from Palma after the attack. Witnesses have described hiding out on a beach strewn with headless bodies while waiting to be rescued by boat. Marine traffic websites showed a string of vessels around the town and the port of Pemba in the south, as people seek to escape by any means available. Civilians living and working in the area appeared to be coordinating the rescue effort. The exact number of casualties in Palma, a town of about 75,000 people in Cabo Delgado province, is unclear.

Ethiopia
Eritrea to Pull Forces from Tigray
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced on Friday that Eritrea would be withdrawing troops from Ethiopia’s Tigray region, which sits along Ethiopia’s northern border with Eritrea. Fighting began in November when forces loyal to the Tigray People’s Liberation Front attacked army bases in the region after a fallout with Abiy’s government. Eritrea sent forces to occupy the region as a pre-emptive defense of its own territory and to reinforce Ethiopian efforts to maintain control. This is the first time the Abiy government has acknowledged the presence of Eritrean troops in the region, which has caused outrage in the country considering the two countries were at war for decades until recently. There are growing accusations of atrocities by Eritrean soldiers against Tigrayan civilians. No timeline has been officially set for the troop withdrawal.
