Boat Capsizes
At least 58 are dead after a boat capsized off the coast of the west African country Mauritania on Wednesday. The boat, carrying roughly 150 Gambian migrants, was en route for the Canary Islands when fuel and food reserves ran low around the Mauritanian coast. 83 passengers swam to shore where Nouadhibou residents provided relief. Following the oppressive 22-year rule of Gambian President Yahya Jammeh, younger citizens are fleeing the country’s shattered economy in droves, seeking out opportunities in Europe. The perilous journey has proved lethal for many, with this incident marking one of the most deadly migrant disaster this year.
