Prepay Rush
With the new cap on state and local tax deductions looming, homeowners across the country are rushing to prepay their 2018 property taxes before December 31, hoping to take advantage of a federal deduction that will be scaled back. The $10,000 cap on deductions for state and local taxes can affect higher-tax paying states such as New York, where in New Rochelle, the average annual property tax can exceed $18,000. “State or local law determines whether and when a property tax is assessed, which is generally when the taxpayer becomes liable for the property tax imposed,” the IRA advisory stated.This map depicts the average amount of property taxes a homeowner may pay by county. Click on the map to learn more.

NYC Fire
On Thursday a massive fire ripped through a five-story brick apartment building in the Bronx, New York, killing at least 12 people, including a 1-year-old girl. Officials are describing the blaze as the city’s deadliest in more than a quarter-century. The fire occurred on Prospect Avenue in the Belmont neighborhood of the Bronx forcing residents to flee into the bitter cold. Investigators are working to determine the cause and why the fire moved so quickly.This map depicts the apartment and location of where the fire occurred. Click on the map to learn more.

Egypt
Church Shooting
At least ten people were killed when gunmen opened fire on the Mar Mina Coptic Orthodox Church in the Helwan district, Cairo. The gunman who was wounded and taken into custody  had opened fire on the church while some worshipers were inside. No group has claimed credit for the attack but Coptic Christians have been regularly targeted in Egypt by ISIS and its affiliates. In April a bombing occurred on Palm Sunday and another at Cairo’s largest Coptic cathedral in December 2016 that killed 28 people.This satellite map depicts the location of the Mar Mina Coptic Christian church in the Helwan district .Click on the map to learn more.
