United States
Projected Case Counts
The COVID-19 Risk Mapping project developed by researchers at Columbia University seeks to estimate the number of future COVID-19 cases and impacts on the health care system by county in the United States. The interactive mapping tool uses four models to forecast possible scenarios of COVID case counts by estimating R values (the average number of people who will contract COVID-19 from one infected person) and changes in social distancing measures. The tool also projects the burden on local health care facilities related to the number of expected cases and highlights high-risk counties with large populations over the age of 65 and with preexisting health conditions.
This map projects an estimated number of new COVID cases between 8/9 and 8/29 with a five percent increase in R. Click on the map to learn more. All COVID-19 updates will be displayed in a red box.

Isreal and the United Arab Emirates
Full Normalization of Relations
On Thursday, in a deal brokered by the United States, Israel and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced “the full normalization of relations” between the two countries. The agreement would establish full diplomatic relations and call for broader cooperation between the two nations on trade, travel, tourism, and other areas while halting Israeli plans for annexation of occupied land in the West Bank. Iran and Turkey condemned the agreement and accused the UAE of abandoning Palestinians. Palestine said Thursday’s deal amounts to “treason,” and called on Arab and Muslim countries to oppose it. The agreement makes the UAE the first Gulf Arab state — and the third Arab country, after Egypt and Jordan — to have full diplomatic ties with Israel.

Greenland
Melting Ice Sheet Past Point of Return
A new study released yesterday found that Greenland’s ice sheet melt is past the point of return, meaning if global warming were to suddenly cease today, it would continue to melt regardless. Researchers in the study used remote sensing techniques to observe the ratio between snow discharge and accumulation, finding that ice discharging into the ocean greatly surpasses the amount of ice accumulating on the surface. This new data is especially alarming when compounded with the new report by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) that July 2020 was the second hottest July on record and that Arctic summer ice is at a record low.
This map depicts the cumulative number of days that Greenland has seen melting in 2020. Click on the map to learn more.
