United States
Proposed Offshore Drilling
Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke announced on Thursday, a plan to lease new sections of US waters to oil and gas companies for offshore drilling, stating that the 47 proposed leasing areas could increase federal revenue by $15 billion. He added that the lease sales are to be scheduled in 25 of 26 areas off the nation’s coastlines between 2019 and 2024. The announcement was met with strong opposition from democrats, some republicans and environmental groups. The proposal would lift a ban on such drilling imposed by President Barack Obama.

World Wide
Coral Bleaching
On Thursday, a study published in the journal Science, stated that the world’s coral reefs are under siege from global warming. The study which was conducted on 100 reefs, concluded that the time between coral bleaching events in recent decades have shortened dramatically from “once every 25-30 years in the early 1980s to an average of just once every six years today”. The increased frequency of these events has reached the tipping point where reefs no longer have sufficient recovery time between severe episodes.
