United States
Ransomware Attacks
More than 40 municipalities in the United States have become victims of ransomware attacks this year, including Baltimore, Albany, and Laredo. The hackers’ identities are kept anonymous and their whereabouts are undisclosed, but data collected by the National Security Agency shows that many are based in Iran and Eastern Europe, while few are in the United States. Texas is the latest to be affected by this ongoing security breach, where computer systems in 22 municipalities have been infiltrated since Friday by attackers demanding a ransom payment. The Department of Homeland Security has since issued a warning about this situation and advised towns and cities to back up their data and update their software.

Bangladesh
Rohingya Repatriation Program
5 buses and 10 trucks sent to the Teknaf refugee camp in Bangladesh to return 3,000 Rohingya Muslims to Myanmar today left empty, as refugees are refusing to leave without guarantees for their safety. More than 740,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled to Bangladesh since August 2017 to escape ethnic cleansing in Rakhine state, in the largest mass displacement of people since the Rwandan genocide in 1994. This round of returns from a list of 22,000 refugees provided by the Bangladesh government comes a year after another repatriation plan by the Myanmar government attempt failed. The United Nations Human Rights Commission is conducting a survey of Rohingya families to determine whether they intend to return to Myanmar.

Indonesia
Unrest in Papua
Claims that police officers used racial slurs while arresting 43 Papuan university students last Saturday have led to protests and riots in the cities of Sorong, Manokwari, Fakfak, and Timika. On Wednesday night, Indonesia deployed more than 1,000 soldiers and blocked internet access in Papua, the largest and easternmost province of Indonesia, to prevent protesters from seeing and sharing “provocative messages” on social media that can incite racial hatred. Protesters have also called for Papuan independence, after decades of racism, discrimination, and human rights abuses.

Q: What two rivers meet to form the point at which three empires had divided what is present-day Poland?
A: Black and White Przemsza rivers
From 1871 to 1918, the Three Emperors’ Corner marked the point at which the Russian, Austria-Hungary, and German empires met after the partitions of Poland. The tripoint is a popular tourist destination, known especially for a 22-meter tower erected on the banks of the Przemsza rivers in honor of Otto von Bismarck.
