United States
Record-Breaking Heat Wave
A heat wave swept through the United States this weekend, causing power outages and sending dozens of people to hospitals for heat-related ailments. In New York City, more than 30,000 customers were without power because of Con Edison shutdowns intended to prevent larger outages. The heat knocked out power for 290,000 in Detroit on Sunday, while 11 people were hospitalized in Washington, D.C., where the heat index reached 110° Fahrenheit. A cold front currently moving through the Midwest should bring relief early this week.

China
Hong Kong Protests
Dozens of masked men attacked pro-democracy protesters and commuters at the Yuen Long subway station on Sunday, leaving 45 hospitalized. This incident followed weeks of mass protests that began over an extradition deal with mainland China, which has now been suspended. However, civil unrest has continued as citizens call for an investigation into police brutality against protesters. Hong Kong’s opposition Democratic Party is investigating Sunday’s assaults as they suspect the perpetrators are part of the Triad, a Chinese organized crime group.

Portugal
Fires Engulf Castelo Branco
About 1,800 firefighters have been deployed to battle a live wildfire in central Portugal’s Castelo Branco region, about 139 miles northeast of the country’s capital, Lisbon. The Portuguese civil protection force says the fires have been “90 percent” controlled as of this morning but warn that strong winds could cause flames to spread. The fires broke out on Saturday and spread to neighboring municipalities Macao and Vila de Rei, which has born the brunt of the flames so far. 30 people have sustained injuries from smoke inhalation, and one civilian has been hospitalized for first- and second-degree burns. Police are currently investigating the cause of the fire, which broke out within an hour, and detained a 55-year-old man on suspicion of setting off the blaze. Portugal has experienced some of its deadliest fires in recent years, with 106 people killed in 2017.
