Australia
Refugee Reparations
The Australian government has agreed to pay up to $53 million to settle a class-action lawsuit against them for alleged abuse of detainees held in Manus Island, Papua New Guinea. The case was to be heard in the Victoria Supreme Court on Wednesday but at the last minute, the government decided to take the settlement of the above-mentioned amount. Australia’s policy of turning away refugees and sending them to Papua New Guinea has been heavily criticized both by the UN and international entities. The Australian government still denies the credibility of any of the claims of abuse on the island. The red marker on the maps depicts the island of Manus, Papua New Guinea, where the detainees fleeing to Australia were sent.
