School Shooting in California
A 16-year old student at Saugus High School opened fire on classmates Thursday in Santa Clarita, California. Two students, a 16-year old girl and 14-year old boy, were killed. In addition, three students were wounded. After shooting five classmates, the gunman shot himself and was hospitalized in critical condition. The gunfire began at 7:30 am on a quad outside the school building. According to gun advocacy group Everytown, this was the 85th incident of gunfire at schools in 2019.

China
Ban on U.S. Poultry Sales Lifted
On Thursday, China lifted a longstanding ban on poultry from the United States.  The original ban was put in place after concerns surrounding outbreaks of avian flu in 2014, and remained in effect even after U.S. poultry producers were no longer at risk of outbreak. The re-opening of poultry markets to U.S. providers is meant to fill a demand for meat created by the lack of pork in China. An ongoing epidemic of African swine fever has left China with a lack of pork supply, causing the price to nearly double. The U.S. now estimates that around $1 billion dollars worth of poultry will be exported to China this year.

Indonesia
Another Strong Quake
An earthquake off the coast of Indonesia sent shock waves through the province of North Maluku early Friday morning. The quake was registered at a magnitude of 7.1 according to the U.S. Geological Survey, and prompted tsunami warnings throughout the region. Residents were awoken by the quake and fled to areas of higher elevation. The water levels were expected to be low because the earthquake’s epicenter was offshore and deep. Indonesia lifted the tsunami warning two hours after the earthquake. Maluku has been struck by similarly large earthquakes in the past, including last July when a 7.3 magnitude quake killed four people.
