United States
Starbucks Racial-Bias Training
After public outcry following the arrest of two black men at a Philadelphia Starbucks location, the chain announced that it will close it’s company-owned U.S. stores for a day to train workers on “racial-bias education.” Nearly 175,000 employees will undergo the training on May 29th. The men were arrested because they had been sitting in the store without buying anything and refused to leave, according to police. The incident opened a discussion about race in public spaces, and led to calls to boycott Starbucks as well as protests at the Philadelphia store. This map depicts the number Starbucks locations per state. Click on the map to learn more.

Australia
Shark Attacks!
Two recreational surfers were injured in shark attacks this past Monday in Gracetown, Australia. The first victim suffered major leg injuries while the second victim suffered a bite to his thigh. The victims reported that the attack was carried out by a White Pointer shark, otherwise known as a Great White. The World Surfer League postponed its remaining events for the Margret River Competition in Western Australia, just 3.8 miles from the attacks. Event organizers suspect the actively aggressive sharks are due to nearby beached whales that became stranded last month.  This interactive map depicts shark attacks that occurred in the Australian area in 2018. Click on the map to interact and expand.

World
95% of Population Living with Poor Air
A report published Tuesday by the State of Global Air reveals that 95% of the world’s population is breathing unhealthy air, specifically, air full of ozone or particulate matter.  Experts estimate that 6 million people worldwide died from poor air quality in 2016, with India and China accounting for 25% and 26% of deaths, respectively. While the world population continues to grow, indoor air pollution exposure has decreased, however, the study found that 1 in 3 people are still exposed to indoor air pollution. The United States, despite ranking better than other countries, still faces air pollution problems with about 4 in 10 people living in areas of high ozone or particulate matter pollution.  This interactive map depicts particulate matter (PM 2.5) levels worldwide. Fishviews
Scott Gallagher, the CEO of Fishviews, and his team are taking a Google Streetview concept and bringing it to the waterways in an effort to map out aquatic passages for fishermen and conservationists. This method allows the public to explore rivers and other bodies of water at the “Streetview level” through computers, mobile devices, and VR technology. Gallagher began surveying waterways for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and today has over 300 miles of waterways mapped. The team’s boats are equipped with a 360 camera for virtual reality compatibility as well as measuring systems to detect and record water temperature, dept, content and more for environmentalists to use. Fishviews partnered with Esri using their ArcGIS platform to convert their geotagged data into a map. Fishviews is planning to continue mapping the 3.5 million miles of water in the United States, hoping to inspire the public to become independent explorers in their own living rooms.  The company also continues to encourage government agencies to put more research into mapping and understanding water passages in relation to conservation and climate change. This technology provides an unique and new perspective to mapping and brings the aquatic geographic terrain into accessible public sight.
