Suspicious Packages
In the past few days, at least 9 suspicious packages have been sent to media offices and prominent Democrats. CNN’s Manhattan office was evacuated yesterday amidst a bomb threat. Additionally, the Clinton’s and Obama’s received suspicious packages resembling a pipe bomb to their respective homes.  Kamala Harris, a California Senator, and Debbie Wasserman Schulz, a Florida congresswoman, also received suspicious packages to their offices. This morning a suspicious package addressed to former Vice President, Joe Biden, was intercepted. A suspicious package addressed to actor Robert De Niro was also discovered in NYC this morning. The FBI is currently investigating who is behind these packages. This map depicts the locations where the suspicious packages were sent, not including the packages addressed to Biden and De Niro. Click on the map to learn more.

Disappearing Island
After the powerful Hurricane Walaka swept through the Hawaiian Islands earlier this month, one of the islands seems to have “disappeared.”  East Island, located about 550 miles northwest of Oahu, was the second largest island of the French Frigate Shoals- an area in the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument, a World Heritage site.  The 11 acre island was critical to the wildlife that relied on it; it was a nursery for endangered Hawaiian monk seals and also a nesting ground for a vast majority of Hawaii’s green sea turtles.  NOAA estimates that 19% of the unhatched turtle nests on East Island were lost after the hurricane. This satellite imagery depicts East Island before and after Hurricane Walaka. Click on the map to learn more.

The Northern Mariana Islands
Super Typhoon Yutu
The Northern Mariana Islands, a U.S. territory, were struck by wind gusts up to 180 miles per hour and waves of 25 to 40 feet high earlier today when super Typhoon Yutu made landfall. So far, it has been reported that several people are injured due to ripped roofs and fallen trees. The electricity on the largest island, Saipan, went out on Wednesday and the power and water outages are expected to last for weeks. Local authorities have yet to establish official reports of the full damage on the islands, which are home to approximately 55,000 people. The Category 5 hurricane will continue its track toward the Philippines and Taiwan this weekend. This map depicts the predicted path of Typhoon Yutu throughout the weekend and the beginning of next week.
