United States
Synagogue Shooting
On Saturday, a man walked into a Pittsburgh synagogue with an AR-15-style assault rifle, screaming “All Jews must die!”, firing at worshipers, killing 11 people and wounding six more. The shooting, believed to possibly be the deadliest anti-semitic shooting in the U.S., highlights the rise in hate crimes across the nation, particularly against Jews. From 2016 to 2017 there was a 57% increase in anti-Semitic incidents nationwide, occurring in every state for the first time in 7 years. Moreover, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) reported an increase in online anti-Semitic hate crimes around the 2018 midterm elections.This interactive heat map depicts extremist and anti-Semitic incidents and attacks in the nation. Click on the map to explore.

Brazil
Election Results
Jair Bolsonaro won the presidential election in Brazil over the weekend. The far-right candidate won by a 55.5% overall vote over left-leaning, ex-Sao Paulo mayor, Fernando Haddad. Bolsonaro has pledged he would lower deficits, public debts, and interest rates. He has also pledged to create better deals with advanced countries that can offer better trade and technologies. However, opponents of Bolsonaro fear that his past as an admiral under Brazil’s military dictatorship and previous support of torture on leftist opponents may undermine human rights.  This interactive map depicts the presidential election results by state. Click on the map to learn more.
