Synagogue Shooting
On Saturday, an attack at the Chabad of Poway synagogue left one killed and three injured in Poway, California. Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein, one of the original founders of the synagogue, lost his right index finger before guiding the children through a backdoor. Lori Kaye, another founder, was killed trying to protect the Rabbi. The attacker was nineteen-year-old, John Earnest who reportedly posted his plan on online forums with an anti-Semitic “open letter.” He is currently in police custody after being arrested on Interstate 15 near the synagogue. This attack comes exactly six months after the Tree of Life Synagogue shooting in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Indonesia
Moving the Capital
On Monday, Indonesian government officials announced President Joko Widodo’s decision to move the capital, Jakarta, off the island of Java. The relocation is due to several factors including overcrowding, pollution levels, its susceptibility to natural disasters, and Java Island’s fast sinking rate. Jakarta is home to over 10 million people and is sinking at an average rate of 1-15cm a year, with some research suggesting large parts of the megacity could be entirely submerged by 2050. The site for the new capital has not been officially announced but the chief candidate is Palangkaraya, hundreds of kilometers north-east of Jakarta in central Kalimantan – the part of Borneo Island that belongs to Indonesia. The idea of moving the capital out of Jakarta has been in discussion since the country gained independence from the Dutch in 1945.

Crane Collapse
On Saturday afternoon, a crane collapsed outside of the under-construction Google complex in Seattle.  The crane collapsed onto a busy street, killing four people.  Two of the victims were iron workers who were inside the crane, the other two died after the crane fell on their vehicle. The crane was in the process of being disassembled when it fell. Officials said they are still investigating the companies involved and the cause of the crane collapse. A complete investigation will take months due to “a very detailed process.”

This annotated aerial imagery depicts where the crane once stood and where it collapsed outside of the under-construction Google complex in Seattle. Click on the map to learn more.
