The Search Continues
Hundreds of rescuers continue their search through southern California for survivors from Tuesday’s deadly mudslides. Within the past four days, the death toll rose to 17 people and an estimated 43 are still missing. The identities of those killed were released to the public and authorities stated that they ranged in age from from 3 to 89, and all lived in Santa Barbara County. The mudslides were exacerbated due to the recent Thomas wildfire that burned more than 281,000 acres in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties.

This map depicts the area where Thomas fire burned away the vegetation which in turn contributed to the mudslides. Click on the map to learn more.

Closing Time
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. announced on Thursday plans to close at least 63 of its 660 Sam’s Club locations across the country, with 12 of the 63 stores being converted into fulfillment centers for online orders.  The store closures were revealed on the same day Wal-Mart announced it would start paying its US staff at least $11 an hour and some people to receive a “one-off” cash bonus. The number of people losing their jobs was not disclosed but the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union said that “150 to 160 people work at each Sam’s Club store, meaning the closures could affect about 10,000 people.”

Venezuela
Migrant Boat Sinking
On Thursday, government officials from Venezuela and Curacao stated that four Venezuelans died and another 28 missing after their boat sank in route to Curacao. Curacao’s coastguard reported an increase number of vessels making the dangerous journey from Venezuela which is gripped in a severe economic crisis. Police confirmed that the boat which left La Vela de coro, Venezuela, was trying to reach the city of Willemstad, Curacao. The incident comes amid heightened tensions after Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro ordered a travel ban and trade blockade with Curacao, Aruba and Bonaire in order to prevent smuggling of Venezuelan goods by what he called “mafias.”
