United States: Tracking Vaccinations

United States
Tracking Vaccinations
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 4.2 million people in the United States have received the first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, falling short of the federal government’s goal of administering 20 million doses by the end of 2020. At least 13 million doses  of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine have been distributed to states, U.S territories, and federal agencies. This map by the New York Times, shows the percentage of people in each state to have received the first shot of the vaccination. The Northern Mariana Islands, South Dakota, West Virginia, and North Dakota lead the nation in percentage of their population having received a shot. Most inoculations have been administered to front-line medical workers and residents in nursing homes. Though 2.2 million doses of the vaccine have been sent to nursing home facilities, fewer than 300,000 residents have received the first shot. Federal health officials acknowledged the vaccine rollout was slower than planned and did not have a reason for why a large percentage of the number of vaccinations shipped have yet to be administered.

Iran
Tensions Increasing
On Monday, Iran announced it resumed enrichment of uranium up to 20% purity at an underground nuclear facility, breaching the  2015 Tehran nuclear deal negotiated between Iran and the international community. The announcement of enrichment at Fordo came as Iran’s Revolutionary Guards seized the MT Hankuk Chemi, a South Korean vessel carrying 7,200 tons of ethanol, “for polluting the Persian Gulf with chemicals.” The dual incidents coincide with increasing tensions between Iran and the United States. Under the 2015 nuclear deal, Iran was allowed to enrich uranium only up to a 3.67% purity and was required to cease enrichment at Fordo, among other requirements. However, Iran began taking steps to “reduce” those commitments after the U.S. unilaterally withdrew from the deal in 2018 and reinstated economic sanctions. In addition, media reports speculated the seizing of the tanker was tied to tensions with South Korea which has for months refused to release billions of dollars of Iranian oil-export revenue which Iran stated was needed to purchase anti-coronavirus medicines including possible vaccines.

Norway
Deadly Landslide
At least seven people were killed and three remain missing after a landslide destroyed nine buildings with 30 apartments in the city of Ask last week. At least 1,000 people had been evacuated from the town of 5,000 located 16 miles (25 kilometers) northeast of Oslo. Somewhere between 1.4 and 2 million cubic meters of land collapsed during the slide, leaving a ravine more than 2,300 feet (700 meters) long and 1,000 feet (300 meters) wide through the town. Officials are calling the disaster the worst landslide in modern Norwegian history. The cause of the slide is not yet known, but it has been reported that Norwegian authorities warned to not construct residential buildings in the area because it was at high risk of landslides in 2005. This morning, a Norwegian police spokesperson reported search and rescue efforts are set to continue amid hopes those still missing have survived in air pockets or cavities left in the wake of the mudslide.

December 24th’s Answer

Q: Lonar Lake, a crater lake that famously turned from green to pink this year, is located on what plateau?

A: Deccan Plateau
Lonar Lake, which was formed by a meteorite crashing into Earth approximately 50,000 years ago, is located 500 kilometers (311 miles) east of Mumbai on the Deccan Plateau. In July, scientists revealed the lake turned a new shade of pink due to a large presence of ‘Haloarchaea’ microbes, which exist in saline water and emit a pink pigment.
