Turbulence Injures Dozens
At least 37 people were injured on board an Air Canada flight today when the plane encountered severe turbulence, forcing an emergency landing in Hawaii. A sudden case of intense turbulence seven hours into the flight from Vancouver to Sydney sent passengers and crew flying into the ceiling. Of the thirty people taken to hospitals in Honolulu, nine were reported to have serious injuries, but all of those injured have been treated and released.

Sunken Nuclear Submarine
Norwegian researchers found the Soviet-era Komsomolets submarine, which sank in the Norwegian Sea in 1989, is emitting radiation levels 800,000 times higher than would be expected in uncontaminated seawater. Scientists used a remote-controlled vehicle to examine the sub’s damage. While the detected levels are higher than normal, researchers say the levels pose no threat to the nearby environment. Norway plans to continue monitoring the situation to ensure consumer confidence in their country’s fishing industry.

Russia
New “Silk Road” Approved
The Kremlin approved construction of a four-lane toll highway stretching 1,250 miles across Russia, between the Belarus border to Kazakhstan’s frontier, in a strategic partnership with China. The “Meridian highway” will be part of a larger 5,000-mile motorway expected to serve as a shorter and faster, though likely more expensive, alternative to existing rail corridors between western China and central Europe. The company, Russian Holding, is privately financing the project backed by public funds, and the project is estimated to cost $9.4 billion. Russian news outlets report work has already begun around Sagarchin, a border crossing point between Russia and Kazakhstan.
