United States
Unemployment Falls
The United States’ unemployment rate has reportedly reached its lowest point since the beginning of the 21st century. After adding 223,000 new jobs last month, the U.S. unemployment rate has fallen to 3.8%. Unemployment peaked at 10% in 2009 but has been falling steadily since the Great Recession. However, wage raises lag behind overall economic improvement. Businesses are reportedly having difficulty finding qualified workers; economists believe this will soon drive up wages as companies are forced to offer higher compensation. This interactive map depicts the latest available unemployment rates by state as of April, 2018. Click on the map to learn more.

Denmark
Burka Ban
Denmark became the latest European country to ban clothes that cover the face, including niqab or burka, after a vote in the country’s parliament. The law was passed by 75 votes to 30 on Thursday and will go into effect August 1, 2018. A fine of $157 will be issued if violated; repeat offenders could face a fine ten times higher or be jailed for of up to six months. The law may be criticized for targeting Muslim women, however, the government stated that the new law does not target any religion, and does not ban headscarves, turbans, or traditional Jewish head coverings. This map depicts European countries with different burka bans. Click on the map to learn more.

United States
Trade Tariffs
President Trump’s new trade tariffs went into effect at midnight last night. There was a sharp increase in tariffs on steel and aluminium imports into the United States. The administration has faced a backlash from both ends of the political spectrum for this new trade policy, as many U.S. allies will be negatively affected.  Countries including China, Mexico and a large part of the European Union have already proposed retaliatory tariffs on the U.S. – such as increased tariffs on corn, wheat, bourbon and cranberries. This map depicts the countries that trade steel with the U.S. and will be affected by the new tariffs.
