United States
Vaccination Threshold Met
Half of U.S. states and Washington, D.C. have fully vaccinated at least half of their adult population, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Maine leads the country with the highest proportion of adults fully vaccinated at 62%. Eight states, including Connecticut, Hawaii, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Vermont, have vaccinated 70% or more of their adult population with at least one dose, a threshold which has been viewed by some public health experts as a target to prevent future waves of the disease. Across the country, more than 61% of adults have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccination and more than 49% are fully vaccinated. However, demand for the vaccine across the country has shrunk to only 50% of the peak reached in April, according to CDC data published on Thursday.

Belarus
Fighters Divert Journalist’s Flight
Belarusian fighter jets compelled a commercial flight from Athens to Vilnius to land in the Belarusian capital of Minsk on Sunday, where Raman Pratasevich, a journalist with a history of criticizing the regime of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenka, was removed from the flight and arrested. Ryanair FR4978 had been flying over Belarusian territory in accordance with its flight plan and was almost to the Lithuanian border when the fighters intercepted it, allegedly responding to the threat of a bomb aboard the plane. Four Russian passengers aboard the plane, believed to be Belarusian or Russian intelligence agents, did not re-board the plane in Minsk to complete the trip to Vilnius. World leaders, including U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, are condemning the act as the Belarusian government threatening international civilian air passengers to arrest an opposition figure who presented no danger.

China
Extreme Weather Kills 21 Runners
Twenty-one athletes competing in an ultramarathon in northwest China have died after being trapped in the mountains during an outbreak of hail, freezing rain, and gale-force winds. 151 other athletes were retrieved alive from the remote location in the Yellow River Stone Forest in Gansu province by a rescue mission of 700 personnel. Athletes for the 62 mile race were reportedly unprepared for the dangerous conditions, with many wearing short-sleeved shirts. China’s top sporting authority, the General Administration of Sport, is responding to the tragedy with promises to enhance safety and emergency protocols.
